The B-69

Thursday, August 21st, 2008

Ah yes, we’re continuing the trend of lengthy pauses between entries here at DD69HQ.  That will happen when:

  1. It’s summertime
  2. Dudes go on vacation
  3. Skinny Moo plays a bunch of gigs
  4. Work keeps the dudes busy

But, vacations are now over, summer is starting what we hope will be a slow gradual wind-down into football season, and the collective drunkdude workload should ease up slightly during September.  With that said, we reconvened for studio night tonight and had a good time getting reacquainted with new and old songs, riffs and other ideas.

One of the big hits of the evening, though, was the new addition to Snoozeking Music’s instrumental arsenal.  What Mike characterized as “probably the coolest piece of music gear ever”:

The Hammond B-69

Oh my, yes that’s pretty. It’s a Hammond B-2 organ, the predecessor to the legendary B-3. The cabinet, drawbars and mechanical guts of this beauty are in great condition, and I’m very grateful to have been able to find such a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.  It came with a Leslie 122, and the combination of organ and Leslie sounds unreal.

If you’ve ever listened to dd69 recordings (if you haven’t, for God’s sake buy our album) you’ll hear Hammond organ throughout many of the songs.  Those tracks were recorded using my live staple, a Hammond XK-2.  Don’t get me wrong, the XK-2 sounds fantastic for what it is: portable.  But there’s a massive difference between the portable, digital version of the instrument and the gleaming oiled tonewheel version pumped through a tube amplifier into a spinning speaker.

She’s sitting in the garage until we can find a couple more fools  friends to help move her into the Snoozeking abode.  We’re already figuring out ways to get microphones and headphones out there to cut some tracks with it in the meantime.

Oh, and lest we forget, this is probably the finest 69-of-the-week ever:
